The OCCA refused entry to the 50+ competition until 1985/6 because it was considered a 'tinpot event'. How wrong can you be!
Oxfordshire have been playing in group four of the national competition for at least 10 years. Group four compromises of Wales, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Herefordshire. A considerable amount of travelling is involved in attending these matches; sometimes a trip of around 250 miles.
The success rate for matches played over the last 10 years, many against first-class counties benefitting from sympathetic financial support, is 82%, a very impressive figure. The cost of hosting matches has escalated to in excess of £200 per game. A match fee of £15 does not cover this commitment.
The sides have been a flagship for the OCCA/OCB for 30 years at 50+ level with some considerable success. With the addition of the 50+ B Team with the possible introduction of a 3rd X1 team for 2020 which is an exciting addition as, veteran cricket is becoming ever more popular.
