Chandlings U11 Girls Festival
On Thursday 6th June we held a Girls Under 11 School Cricket Festival at Chandlings School. We had over 80 girls from various schools attend the day and play a number of short sharp pairs games. The format used on the day ensured maximum participation throughout as teams got to play a total of five games each.
We were extremely lucky this year as we had a visit from New Zealand International Cricket Star Suzie Bates! Suzie is currently over in the UK playing for Hampshire in Division 1 of the Women's County Championships. She also plays for Southern Vipers in the Kia Super League (KSL) and of course the New Zealand women's cricket team. She sat down with the girls after lunch and told them a bit about herself before answering some great questions from the crowd!
After the Q & A, the girls still had two matches to play so everyone headed off to their pitches and got stuck back into the cricket. Suzie stayed and umpired two of the girls matches, the last one being the final between Chandlings and Cranford House (A)! What a fantastic game of cricket and great experience for the girls to be getting top tips on the field from one of the best female cricketers in the world! We saw some great batting and bowling but the fielding was on fire as we saw some great catches from both teams! The final result, only separating the teams by three runs, saw Chandlings crowned winners and take back the trophy for the third year in a row!! Congratulations girls!
Massive well done to all the team that attended, to all the coaches that helped out umpiring and scoring, to Chandlings for being such an amazing host again and to Suzie Bates for giving up some time to come along and see the girls!!
We look forward to the festival next year. If your school would like to enter a team for the 2020 girls festival, please email you EOI to Laura Crofts (ewilson@oxoncb.com).
